  In 1851 England Census, was living with his father Joseph and mother Ann Lough, at 221 Arthurs Hill, Westgate, Newcastle-on-Tyne In the 1861 census, at age 13, he was living at 14 South Hetton, Haswell, occupation Coal Screener. In 1871 England Census, living with his wife and daughter Annie at 182 Gibbon Street, Bishop Auckland, occupation engine fitter. In 1880 he went to South Africa on the SS America. He worked at the Salt River workshops of the Cape Government Railway for 28 years, retiring in 1907. He was a prominent Wesleyan. When he died he was living at 17 Cranks Rd, Observatory, Cape Town. He is buried in a family grave Maitland Woltermada no 1 Cemetery [2nd gate] grave no 18938
