Notes - PRIVATE
- Occupation: Master tailor
Death Certificate of George in 1878, gives his father as Alexander Thompson, Taylor (master) and mother as Mary Thompson nee Simpson.
I have yet to find a «b»birth certificate«/b» for Alexander born in Brechin, although there is an Alexander Thomson born of John Thomson and Agnes Carey«u» in Inverkeilor «/u»that lend me astray for a while.
(Why do I think he was born in Brechin? Because this is what was recorded in the 1851 Census)
Birth parents: But which ones?
There are two Alexander Thompsons whose births are registered «b»in Brechin«/b» that could be our ancestor. Which is the correct one is not yet certain.
The records read:
1)"«b»James Thomson«/b», weaver in Brechin had a son born of his wife «b»Elizabeth Hood«/b», 29th Ult (May?) and bapt. 3rd Cur«sup»t«b» «/b»«/sup»before the Congregation, named Alexander"

«/b»
2))"«b»«i»John Thompson«/b», lint miller at Arrat's Mills, had a son born of his wife «b»Mary Stott«/b», 22nd and baptised the 25th Cur«sup»t«b» «/b»«/sup»before the Congregation, namedeAlexander"«/i»
Source: OPR Births 275/0040 0322 Brechin
The earliest certain record I have located is his «b»marriage reocord«/b» of 1813 at St Vigeans (near Arbroath) Forfarshire, later Angus, Scotland which says,
«b»"Alexander «u»Thomson«/u» of the Royal Artillery and Mary «u»Simson«/u»
of this parish were married."«/b»
This may confirm the family lore about adding a "P" to the name.
No record for an Alexander «u»Thompson«/u» can be found in the same time frame.
Occupation could be a problem unless Alexander was a tailor for the Royal Artillery, or learnt his trade after leaving the army.
Baptismal Registration for his son, Robert reads:
Baptisms in «b»1817«/b» [Leith North, Midlothean];
Thomson: Robert lawful son of Alexander Thomson Gunner R[oyal] Artillery & Mary Simson was born the 28th of Dec 1816 & baptised the 5th of Jan 1817.
NB "Gunner" is a rank in the Artillary and does not mean that his occupation in the artillary was not as a tailor.
The «b»1841 Scottish Census«/b» has Alexander THOMPSON ,
a 45-yr old Tailor living on High Street in Arbroath, Angus,
with his wife Mary, (45yrs) and the following children:
THOMPSON Mary F 20 Milliner Angus
THOMPSON Anne F 15 Straw Bonnet Maker Angus
THOMPSON Margaret F 15 Stay Maker Angus
THOMPSON Alexander M 13 Angus
At this time 25yr old George and his wife and baby, William (3), are living separate from his parents but also on High Street, Arbroath.
By the «b»1851 Scottish Census«/b» Alexander Thomson is now 58
and is living at 14 Academy Street in Arbroath with his wife, Mary,
and children
THOMPSON Mary F 27 a dressmaker
THOMPSON Margaret F 25 a dressmaker
THOMPSON Alexander M 23 who is now a seaman.
Anne had married, Alexander F Stephen, the year before, in 1850, and was living in Brechin.
In this Census Alexander's birth place is given as "«b»Forfar, Brechin«/b»"; his wife and children all born in Arbroath.
I have found no death record for Alexander Thompson or Thomson.
There are three records of deaths of an Alexander Thomson in Dundee between 1951 and 1855 but I have not looked at them.
