In 1850 Anne married Alexander Stephen. The banns were read in both Brechin and Arbroath.
The 1861 Scotland Census records Ann Stephen, age: 39 as the head of the household (Where was her husband?) living at 31 St David St, in Brechin Burgh, Angus. Her occupation is given as Dress Maker. The people living with her are of interest: two daughters, Jessie H (9) and Margaret A (8) and her mother, Mary Thompson who is listed as "tailor's wife" not "widow".
There are an additional 3 people in the house:
Margaret Robertson a 25 yr old cousin born in Alyth, Perthshire whose occupation is given as domestic servant. Did she work for Anne, or someone else?

1888: George Batchin Thompson records in his diary of that year visiting his uncle [and aunt] in Arbroath prior to going to Edinburgh University.
1891: Anne and her husband, Alexander Stephen were at this point "living on private means" with their daugher, Jessie at 2 Hill Street in Arbroath; the same house where George Batchin Thompson had visited his cousin Jessie in 1888.
