      1891:
      Town: Arbroath

      Address: 2, Hill St
      Occupation: Living on Private Means

      1901:
      Registration district: Arbroath
      Civil parish: St Vigeans
      County: Angus
      Address: 57, Keptie St
      Occupation: Retired China Merchant

      Death certificate reads:
Alexander Fleming Stephen Widower of Anne Thompson [died] 1902 July 26th.. 21 Victoria Street, Arbroath . M. 79yrs
[parents] David Stephen [unknown profession] & Janet Stephen MN Hepburn, deceased
[informant] Jessie H Stephen, daughter. occupier, present...

Alexander's occupation is reported as "soldier" on his daughter, Jessie's death certificate, in 1923. However the informant is a "...cousin" by the name of Dorothy Medville[?]

The lack of an occupation onAlexander's death certificate is unfortunate as it could have been enlightening. We have 2 decades where Alexander is not yet found, followed by an internment in the Montrose Insane Asylum, followed by his being retired with enough money to be "Living on Private Means". Very odd for a man who appears to have been in an insane asylum.
Could Alexander have been away soldiering? The insane asylum entry and his daughter's death certificate give indications in that direction. In which case how did he make enough money to retire "Living on Private Means"?
