- Gerald was in the merchant navy, after which (here's the gap) ended up marrying Sylvia in Natal. My oldest brother John says that the families were friends in England. After the navy, and either before or immediately after marriage, Dad studied & qualified as a land surveyer .
So it was jobs that they moved around for in the forties, although About 1944 he got a job at Germiston Council, where he stayed for about 25 years, until retirement.
