Flamstead lies 4.25 miles south of Luton. 3.5 miles west of Harpenden and 6.75 miles north west of St Albans. Ordnance Survey Landranger Map No 166 - Flamstead is in square 0714.
Approximately 2 miles north west of Flamstead, in square 0415, is a small hamlet called Roe End. About 0.5 mile north east of Roe End is the village of Markyate. Four Burchmores are listed in telephone directory at Markyate: Burchmore D F 5 Wesley Road Markyate, Herts Burchmore P E 35 Cowper Road Markyate, Herts Burchmore P F "Glenwood", Luton Road, Markyate, Herts Burchmore W A, 108 Pickford Road, Markyate, Herts.
Roe End is nothing more than a lane along which are some farms and cottages. It is certainly not a village and hardly a hamlet. There is no known cemetery in the area the nearest being at Flamstead. Originally the lane was a through lane but now it is blocked after a certain distance and the continuation is marked "private".
According to a 1901 map the north side of the Lane had, Feveralls farm, Little Roe End farm and Roe End farm. The south side had just a row of cottages called Black Slough Cottages. All these premises are spaced along the lane for a distance of about 350 yard and are there today plus on the north side a modern Roe End Lodge and on the south side a modern Holly Bush Lodge. This latter building is at the bottom of the lane and it is beyond here that the lane is marked private.
Opposite where the lane joins the larger road called Cherverells Green is a very large house called Cheverells Park, which I think is a private school. There were no signs on the map of a demolished house.

George Burchmore (1762-1843) was at Row End Farm, Flamstead, in 1788 and was still there at the time of his death. His son George (1786-1838) was also there.
George Snr was the son of Thomas Burchmore of Flamstead (1729/30-1806) and the line probably goes back to Thomas Birchmore of Redbourn, who made a will in 1684.
The Birchmore family were apparently mainly well-to-do yeoman farmers who married into other yeoman farming families in the area, and the many resulting cousin marriages make it virtually impossible to draw up a family tree.
In 1815 he married Ann Norton at Flamstead, of course his eldest legitimate son was baptised George and he (George senior) farmed at Row End Farm and his sister [Sarah] and husband [Michael Rowed] farmed Cheverell's Farm, also at Flamstead. Legitimate son George also farmed at Flamstead (Legit son George b. 1816 married Sarah Kingston in 1842)
