  • Notes
    • In the 1841 census he is living in the Parish of St Peter, in St Albans, occupation Farmer. The name of the farm is something like «i»Roe Hyde Farm «/i» Living at the farm with the family were three servants, Mary Bailey, Timothy Gray and John Collins. The last two are listed as Agricultural Labourer.

He travelled to Port Natal on the «i»King William«/i» with his wife and family, part of W.J. Irons C«i»hristian Emigration & Colonization Society. «/i»St. Albans is the Roman city of Verulamiun, and the settlers in this group founded the settlement of Verulam near Port Natal.

They were entitled to lot 167 (387.5 acres) and Erf 21 in Verulam, but there is no evidence they took this up. In July 1850 they were resident in Pietermaritz St, Pietermaritzburg, advertising that he would enclose and plough erfs, and keep gardens in order by month, week or year.

Certainly he was in England by June 1852. Mrs Wickes had been left 200 pounds by an uncle in England, and in Nov 1852 the lawyer dealing with her affairs wrote to her saying that, soon after he had received a bill from her, Wickes had appeared and had claimed the whole amount from the executors. After 'deliberations' they had decided that he could only have half. The lawyer forwarded the rest to her - about 136 pounds. She left Pietermaritzburg in June 1852, destination unknown - possibly she was the Mrs Wicks/Weeks (sic) who left for England in December 1855 as an intermediate passenger on the «i»Lady of the Lake«/i». Only in Jan 1857 was Wickes in a position to pay the survey fees, and Joseph as his agent got a Pietermaritzburg lawyer to obtain the same. A second letter in May still didn't help, but in December 1858 the government w

His death date range was provided by Shelagh Spencer, who says "(He was) still alive July 1860, dead by Feb 1874"
