  Joseph was an Ostler at the Crown Hotel, Pietermaritzburg in October 1858. (An ostler is a person employed in a stable to take care of horses). Also variously a servant and agricultural labourer around Pietermaritzburg [information provided by Shelagh Spencer] His death notice states that "The only property found in the estate are £21.6.1 in the Government Savings Bank and a few small things. The deceased leaves a widow who separated from him. The widow does not wish to be appointed Executor signed Henry Spikings"
