Notes - PRIVATE
- Dr John Lundie, Bsc. Dsc. He appears in the "Dictionary of American Biography", described as an Engineer and Inventor. Born on 14th December, 1857, in Arbroath, the son of James Lundie and Anne Honeyman. He went to school at Dundee high school, graduating in 1873; spent four years on the office of the harbour engineer of the port of Dundee; went to study at Edinburgh University, graduating Bsc in «b»1880«/b», with a first prize in mathematical physics. He moved to the United States of America soon after, and was heavily involved in the building of railways.
He worked on many projects including the building of table rock tunnel; laying out the first low-level drainage system for Chicago; power handling of freight on the central Georgia Railway; the London Metropolitan Railway; using electric power on the Isthmus of Panama (in conjunction with the General Electric Company) and directing the affairs of the Panama-American Corporation. He developed a theory of "rapid acceleration" concerning the movement of trains, for which he presented a thesis at the University of Edinburgh in 1902, entitled "The economics of Train Movement", and being awarded a Doctorate of Science. From this thesis comes the "Lundie formula", which is concerned with train resistance. In the course of this work he obtained several patents including: the Lundie Ventilated Rheostat (Patent No 687,569 Nov 26 1901) and the Lundie Tie Plate (Patent No. 1065696, June 1913). Subsequent to these inventions John founded the Lundie Engineering Corporation, of which he was president. In 1921 h
John was twice married. His first wife, Iona Oakley Gorham, whom he married in 1906, died in 1925. In 1929 he married Mrs Alice Eddy Snowden, the widow of Dr. Albert A Snowden. John died on 9th February 1931, in New York.
