    • «b»Thomas Lyall«/b» married «b»Annie Lundie«/b» in «b»1879«/b» in the city of Dundee, Angus, Scotland. In the «b»1881 Scotland Census«/b» Thomas (30) gave his occupation as "draper" The business, probably at the address 93 High St, Montrose, (which is the residential address they gave on the Census) must have been doing quite well for they employed 17 yr old Annie Carnegie as a servant. Annie Lundie/Lyall had recently given birth to 9 month old David.

It seems that Thomas may have learnt initially from his father who was a Master Linen Draper in Montrose, Angus, Scotland and that Thomas then worked for some time in London, for the «b»1871 English Census«/b» finds a Thomas Lyall, born in Scotland, in 1851, working in a large establishment employing at least 25 draper's assistants. The business was in St Andrew, Holborn, London.

By «b»1891 «/b»Thomas was 40 yrs old and had changed his occupation to "photographer", and moved house to 108 High St, Montrose. The family included the children: David Watson Lyall (10), Frank Lyall (8), Maurice Lyall (5) but neither mother Annie nor 9 yr old Rhoda were at home. Annie and Rhoda were staying [visiting?] with Annie's mother, Grandmother Anne Lundie (nee Honeyman), in Liff and Benvie, part of Dundee. Photography must have been profitable for they had two servants at this point: Chrishuie [probably a transcription error for Christine] Mowat (16) and Nelly Coull (23).

By «b»1901«/b» Thomas was 50 yrs old. The family were living at "Milnamaer", Montrose, Forfarshire, Scotland, and consisted of mother and father, Annie and Thomas; the three children: Rhoda Lyall (19), Frank Lyall (18), Maurice Lyall (15) and Mary A Milne (21), a servant. Had David left home? His whereabouts have yet to be discovered. There is no death record of David between 1891 and 1956.

Thomas died in Montrose four years later, in «b»1905.«/b»
Death certificate reads: «i»Thomas Lyall, Photographer (Master) Married to Annie Honeyman Lundie died may 27, 1905... West End Park, Montrose, M aged 54 years, Parents Alexander Lyall, draper, deceased, & Marjory Lyall MN Crabb (deseased) Cause, Cancer of stomache, ... Signed Maurice Lyall, Son...«/i»
