- No Birth certificate has yet been found for William Tasker.
20-year old William was living with his blacksmith father and 15-yr old sisters, Betty and Mary, at Causwayend, Coupar Angus, Perthshire, when the «b»1841 Scotland Census«/b» was taken. His occupation was given as a baker.
By the time the «b»1851 Scotland Census «/b»was taken William's sisters had left home, his mother was back at home, and William, now 32 is still with his parents at Causwayend, Coupar Angus, Perthshire.
Occupation: Baker (journeyman). The 1900 US Census gives his year of immigration to the USA as 1851.
The will of his sister, Catherine Tasker, of 1901, it says " «i»To Mr William Tasker, America, my brother, [I bequeath] my mother's desk."

In «b»1856«/b» the Iowa State Census records William Tasker, now 36 years old, living with the family of John Tasker (wife Mary J, children Henry L age 6, William S aged 4, and one year old Sarah S Tasker) on a farm in Jones county, Iowa, near Pierce. There were 2 other Scots listed at this address (James Disart and David Smith) and all four men are listed as farmers. This is of particular interest for in «b»1885«/b» Alexander Lundie, William Tasker's nephew by his sister Mary Tasker is recorded living with this same John Tasker when he was newly arrived from Scotland. How William and John Tasker are related has not yet been discovered. Also of interest is the Paul family who lived on a neighbouring farm, for although there is no Grace Paul in the list, she was surely related, and became William's wife the same year, 1856. Unfortunately this Census did not record the relationships of the inhabitants.
In 1860 William and Grace were farming in Wyoming Township, Iowa giving the value of their estate at $2000 and their personal estate at $400
There is a «b»«i»U.S., Civil War Draft Registrations Record «/b»«/i»for William Tasker, age 44, in Wyoming, Jones Co., Iowa dated 1 July «b»1863.
«/b»In «b»1865«/b» William is listed as liable for tax in Wyoming County so presumably he was back on the farm although the Civil War still raged.
In the «b»1880 US Census«/b» William and Grace are listed on the farm with Lewis M, John F, Frank P, Mary C (who is noted to have 'hip disease') and Arminta B
No 1890 census has been found
In «b»1885«/b» the Iowa State Census lists the family on the farm but Lewis is misisng.
Daughter Arminta married in 1896.
Daughter Mary C "Mayme" married in 1898.
«b»1900 US Census«/b» only lists William, Grace and the sons, Lewis (42) and Franklin (33) as farm labourers. Son, John Tasker, his wife Minnie and children Neil and Robert live on the adjoining farm.
There is an Iowa Cemetery Record for a William Tasker, born 2 Aug 1818 buried at "Wyoming cemetery" Madison (Town), Jones County, Iowa. This record gives the death date as 9 Oct 1904.
(Town), Jones County, Iowa. This record gives the death date as 9 Oct 1904.
From «i»History of Jones County, Iowa, Past and Present, «/i»R. M. Corbitt, S. J. Clarke Publishing Co., Chicago, 1910, p. 640.:
"...but the father was a native of Scotland. He came to the United States, however, in his early manhood, locating first in Ohio. While there he made the acquaintance of the woman who afterward became his wife, and in 1852 he walked from Iowa City to Jones county.
In Linn county, he purchased his first farm and a few years later bought a tract of land in Jones countv which remained his and his wife's home until 1875-6, which year they spent in North Carolina.
When Mr. Tasker came to this country he had but very little money with him, but he was a careful business man, being able to derive a fair income from his investments, so that at his death, which occurred October 10, 1904, in the eighty-seventh year of his age, he was in comfortable circumstances. Mrs. Tasker had died a little more than a year before her husband, her death having taken place August 27, 1903.
Eleven children were born to them:
«tab»L. M.;
·«tab»J. F., who lives in Wyoming township
·«tab»F. P.;
·«tab»Mary C., the wife of J. W. Morse, of the same township;
·«tab»Araminta B., the wife of Frank Henderson, now living in Virginia:
·«tab»and six who have passed away...."
