• Notes

  PRIVATE In Granny Lou's book she wrote that she named her daughter Lily after her mother. Lily was probably a contaction of Elizabeth. In the 1851 census she was living with her family at 6 Lion Place, Gravesend. In the 1861 census she was living with her family at 155 Parrock St, Gravesend. In the 1871 census she was living at home at 24 South Hill Rd, Gravesend, with her father and sisters Fanny and Alice, her occupation was "Teacher of Music". Granny Lou says of her "Before I go on with my story, I must talk of mother, as a mother means so much to you all your life: you love your husband and your children, but your mother is something different and you need her in so many ways. My mother was a tiny. Little lady - I say 'lady' for she was a lady in every way. I don't think she ever did an unkind thing to anybody in all her life. She was well educated, her father being a schoolmaster. My mother was a governess before she married and also taught music, and she had never really worked hard until she came to South Africa, but she loved Africa and never wanted to go back to England, only I know that she would have like to have seen her sisters again. Their names were Fanny and Alice. They lost their mother when Alice was a tiny baby." She died in Mafeking in 1925
