Notes - PRIVATE
- Trying to understand this relationship I have had to work backwards from the «b»1871 Census«/b» when we find David Beattie with his father, Robert Beattie, for the first time. In this record David is a minister of the Garvald Free Church, and his father is listed as a retired merchant.
At the previous census in 1861 David (27) was visiting in Edinburgh and was listed as a minister.
Now things get interesting for in the 1851 Census a 22-year old David Beattie was working on a farm "the Mains of Auchmithie Bothy" with 4 other young farm workers. [Personal note: I think this is the farm that in 2008 runs right up to the cliffs and which we passed on our cliff path walk to Auchmithie from Arbroath]. In this same census David's father is recorded as a tea merchant living in Arbroath. Was this seasonal farm work, or a permanent occupation?
The 1841 census shows David's 55-yr old father working as a flax dresser at the same address (Panmure St) in Arbroath where he is found in 1851, but an 8-year old David Beattie and a 5-yr old Alexander Beattie are found living with a fisher family in nearby Auchmithie {60 yr old Jean Eaton, Elizabeth Spink 30 & John Spink 35 (fisherman)} Most curious. It was the habit when times were tough for family members to take on the children of relatives so one wonders what the circumstances could haveabeen.
