In a letter to his sister Grace, in Canada dated 8 March 1867 he wrote: It is now two years since I returned to Edinburgh from London (in which I spent three years of by far the happiest time of my life.)I have been engaged in business on my own account - first in partnership with my wife's brother who was of a similar professiom, but as he wasn't up to much, I left him...
