- PRIVATE
- Name taken from indistinct death record of daughter Mary Taylor nee Scott. However the name "David Scott" is very clear.
"... farmer in Arbirlot[?]..."
I can find no marriage record for David Scott in Angus County between 1754 -1794 to anyone called Barbara or Balfour.
David Scott was a very common name in this time period, and as he was a local farmer he is unlikely to have come from farther afield. (
(Farming is not a very portable career, unlike e.g. tailors, who moved around a lot)
HOWEVER
I have found a marriage certificate between a «b»William «/b»Scott and «b»Barbara Balfour«/b», in Arbirlot in 1743. Perhaps this was David's father and mother, and the parents of Mary Scott could have been incorrectly entered.
In searching for the birth of his daughter, Mary there are two possibilities: Mary born to David Scott with wife Grizal (Gace) Paterson
or
Mary born to John Scott with wife Barbara Johnston.
Errors could be:
Not born in Arbirlot (not a likely mistake)
Error in recording the birth (minister had too much whiskey, father illiterate so unable to see the mistake?)
It is unlikely that an intoxicated person would get the father's name wrong but quite possible that the wrong mother was recorded.
