According to Chloris David, later Edey:
Karl Hansen...was the "Black Sheep", babied and petted by your great Grandmother [Johanne Karen Mathilde Petersen] who had littl time over for the young Albert David which is why he became such an aggressive young man who seldon took the advice of others, or so I was told by the old man M.D. [Dr Albert David], shyly making circles in the air with his corncob pipe and his eyes screwed up as if in laughter.
...Karl stayed at home for a long time not doing anything but planting things in the garden until Hand Jurgen [Hansen, his brother] decided he should be up and doing. He travelled to Kokstad to some work there....I never knew him,, he used to ooze out of a room and disappear. His wife Kate, did nothing else but produce a chind each year. I liked the little I knew of her. She was Afrikaans which of course, was athe EMD as far as your grandmother was concerned. She had about 6 children and the only one I remember is Albert Hansen; my own age and so good looking. Also very clever. The Old Man {Dr Albert David] "had him educated" a nd he often came up to «i»Meadows«/i» for holidays.
Karl drank and was sickly, and never held down a job. Long after his mother {Johanne Karen Mathilde Petersen] had died the Old Man M. D. [Dr Albert David] was still struggling with him. Hans Jurgen tried to help but to no avail...the man was a washout. I have an idea that Aunt Kate [Karl's wife] asserted herself and they went up to the Transvaal to her people. I can remember being on the farm whena a telegram cam to say taht he had died and my Father looking at it and saing he couldn't get away now. In the end The old Man [Dr Albert David] adn Ursula (Wilkins, Alma's daughter) attended the funeral....
