    • At the 1861 census he is recorded living with his family, age 19, occupation Booking Clerk.

According to evidence which he gave before a Parliamentary Commision of Enquiry, he became Director of the Cattle Market on January 1, 1872, when it was first established. The market received all imported cattle into the UK, where they were sold and slaughtered. The market operated until the First World War.

When he was appointed to the position at the cattle market, he was stationmaster at Southend-on-sea, according to a newspaper article.

At the 1901 and 1911 census he was living at Greenwich with his sister Alice, he was a Superintendent of the Foreign Cattle Market.

In 1869 the government passed the Cattle Diseases Prevention Act, which introduced the practice of slaughtering imported foreign animals at the dock where they landed (preventing diseases spreading to domestic livestock). The Dockyard Corporation of London bought the old dockyard at Deptford and converted it into a cattle market and slaughterhouse for the reception of foreign cattle entering London.

The market covered twenty-three acres and included three jetties for the unloading of the livestock. It was opened in 1871 and soon became the principal market for the sale of foreign cattle, taking over from the Metropolitan Cattle Market at Islington, which continued to handle domestic cattle sales.
