      Hi Ian
If you have a connection to this settler, then you have a very, very distant relationship to my husband, Michael John Walker.
My husband is descended from Edward, Henry's brother. They came out together with their families but both died in the late 1850's, in Natal.
Edward's son, Edward Rutland Richards married his cousin Annie Charlotte. They moved to Wakkerstroom (old Tvl) with some of the original Edward's children and a sizeable Richards brood was raised there. They seemed to have moved to and fro over the Berg from Wakkerstroom to Newcastle.
Edward Rutland's son, Henry Rutland Richards, had a son, also Edward Rutland who had a daughter, Daphne Iris, who married Harry Baxter Walker. Daphne and Harry are the parents of my husband, Michael.
Many of the Wakkerstroom boys married local girls and there are Afrikaans speaking Richards in the Wakkerstrrom, Ermelo, Standerton areas to this day. Of course, those that settled in Natal, stayed very British.
The family fought on both sides in the Boer War-- there are claims for compensation on the SA Archives site. More info can be found on Familysearch-- the Latter Day Sts site. Though sometimes this is not 100% as the info has been collected by people with insufficient knowledge of SA, so errors have crept in.
I hope this has been of help. Let me know if I can do more. Please tell me more about yourself, your family and your move to Canada.
      Regards
      Heather Walker
