  • Notes
    • On September 10, 1657 the ship «i»Hasselt«/i» departed from the Cape of Good Hope on a voyage via Angola to West Africa with instructions to purchase slaves for the Cape. At first proceeding to the site of present day Luanda in Angola, they found four other ships already there, so continued up the coast to Andra, a slave trading centre on the coast of Guinea, where they purchased 271 slaves. By the time they arrived back at the Cape on May 6, 1658 there were about 226 onboard, the rest having died on the voyage. Eighty were sent on to Batavia, while many more succumbed to illness or escaped, leaving only 41 remaining by 1659. This is probably as horrific as it sounds. Among those surviving the voyage was my 9x Great-Grandmother, Regina van Rapenberg van Guinea, then about 8 years old, as well as her 11 year old sister Anna van Guinea.

Regina was sold to Leendert Cornelisz from Zevenhuysen in the Netherlands, who had been granted «i»vrijburgher«/i» status in 1657, and whose occupation was woodcutter. Regina together with four other slaves, was put up in 1658 as collateral for a loan to Leendert from the VOC -much as a modern farmer might use his cattle as collateral, a horrifying thought for modern readers. The loan was repaid in a matter of weeks so presumably used to overcome a short term cash flow problem for Leendert.

Regina gave birth to a child, Lijsbeth Jans van de Kaap in 1663, aged about 13. The father is unknown - long thought to be Jan van Ceylon, this has been disproved.
