Notes - Captain of the Ross and Caithness Militia. Unable to save his family property which had to be sold, he emigrated to South Africa together with 200 Scottish families who were to be indentured to him to pay back the passage money. Most of them broke their contracts with him.
He purchased the farm Groot Vaders Bosch in the district of Heidelberg which is still (2020) in the possession of his descendants.
In 1820 he was appointed magistrate of the Peddie District (then called the Neutral Territory) beyond the Fish River.
