  PRIVATE PRIVATE Family lore says that Alma was brought to South Africa, along with three siblings, when her mother, a Danish speaking widow in Schleswig-Holstein, eloped with a Dr. David. Family lore says that Alma's mother and Dr David married in England before emigrating to South Africa where they had, possibly, two children together. Some, but not all, of this has now been supported by documentation. Her death notice confirms her place of birth as Flensborg [Flensburg], Germany, and supplies the names of her mother and father. From this, as her father died in 1893, Alma would have been 9 years old when her father died. Dr Albert David declared that he had been in South Africa since 1892, so if they left Germany with him, they would have left almost immediately after her father's death. Alma's estate papers list her name as WILKINS, ALMA HANSINE KATHERINE. NEE HANSEN. A record of a marriage between a Karen Johanna M Hansen and Albert David in 1904 Jul-Aug-Sep at St Pancras (1902-1977) Greater London seems to confirm the family story that her mother married her second husband in England. To date no definitive record can yet be found of their passage to South Africa. Alma's mother's death notice supplied the names of her (surviving) siblings. brothers' naturalization papers in the Cape Archives give the dates of their arrival and movements in South Africa prior to 1904, the date her mother married Dr David in London. There are records that place a Dr Albert David as the district surgeon in Elliotdale. There is a book inscribed to Alma from the Sisters in Elliotdale which seems to confirm that she lived there. This is also one of the places where Ernest Wilkins worked as a magistrate so Alma most likely met her husband in Elliotdale. No record of their marriage has yet been found to confirm date or location. Residence information for 1893-1907 is assumed as the family would have moved as a unit. Ernest Wilkins worked in several locations in the Transkei as magistrate, so the family moved around a bit: Willowmore in 1905 - NAAIRS Elliotdale in 1906 - NAAIRS Nqamakwe in 1909 - NAAIRS Elliotdale 1920- birth of daughter Diana "Billy" Bizana in the 1920s - references in correspondence of G.B.
