"He and my father played the organ at the dockyard chapel whenever required not just on Sundays (they played three times every Sunday) but also at naval ceremonies.
One Sunday, after all the congregation had left, the two of them got back on the organ (Earnest playing with Percy frantically pumping) and played at full pitch the latest Souza marches. They were caught at it and given a
full dressing down by the dockyard Superintendent."
I met Earnest only when he came to England after your grandmother had died. I think it was 1934 but am not certain. I would be only about 11 years old at the time. When he and Ursula came to Britain, they travelled extensively around the country and whenever possible, my mother and father accompanied them (this was one of the occasions when I stayed with Adelaide in Lewisham).
From a young boy's perspective, I remember him as a tall man - well, taller than my father - and well built and full of energy"

"Earnest, as a Post Office clerk, would have been bored to death, but jobs were hard to come by in those times - hence his departure for S.A."

Obituary [Source unknown: in possession of Pat Stephenson nee Wilkins, 2012.]
«i»Ernest William Wilkins: The death occurred at Kei Road on Sunday of Mr Ernest William Wilkins at the age of 68 years after a long illness patiently borne.
The late Mr Wilkins came to this country during the Anglo-Boer War. He entered the Native Affairs Department and served in the Transkeian Territories for many years as clerk, assistant magistrate, and later as magistrate. He was transferred to Johannesburg as Magistrate and Native Commissioner ,and retired on pension while serving at Herschel.
During the war years Mr Wilkins acted in a temporary capacity for men on service. Latterly he became Secretary of the Village Management Board at Kei Road, which position he held at the time of his demise.
He was very well known and popular throughout the Transkei and was held in high esteem, particularly by brother officials who knew him as an efficient and hard working official.
Deepest sympathy is extended to his family.
«/i»According to Cloris David: «i»"...adorded by the Xhosas who showered gifts on him. Animal skins, Karosses, rugs etc. Alma was a real tartar which probably drove him to become the old drunk he did. Also liked chasing his young nieces arouns...D.O.M«/i»."
From "David Family History"12 Nov 1985 [a letter to her son David Adey, whose daughter gave it to Roslyn Rose who sent it to Veronica. Much of her information is incorrect.]
