- No birth certificate has yet been found for «b»William Carey Thompson «/b»nor for «b»William Thomson«/b». However, he was likely born in Arbroath in 1837, for he is found there in the «b»1841 Scottish Census, «/b»aged 3, with his parents. Headstone in Arbroath Abbey gives the names of siblings, showing that William Carey was the second child in the family. William Carey Thompson's Death Certificate gives the names of his parents so that link is verified.
Also the 1871 England Census records William's birthplace as Scotland.
The «b»1841 Scottish Census «/b»shows that the Thompson family was living in the same house as:
Isabella Hunter born abt 1826
John Nughton abt 1826
Elizabeth Scott abt 1796
Margart Scott abt 1786
Williams Scott abt 1791
but, unfortunately, at this time the census did not record the relationships between household members. William's grandmother was Mary Scott so it is likely that these were relatives.
To date no census records can be found of the family in 1851.
In «b»1861 the Scotland Census«/b» shows a William Thompson living at 30 Rose Street, Edinburgh St Andrew, Midlothian. His occupation is given as «b»Journeyman Tailor. «/b»This William is living with his mother "Elizabeth Thomson " and sister "Mary Thomson". I feel sure this is our William Carey Thompson. But where was his father?
In «b»1867 «/b»William Carey Thompson married Jessie Mather a spinster of Edinburgh in St Andrews Auckland Church, Co Durham/ South Church, Bishop Auckland, Durham, England where he was working as a tailor or tailor's cutter. One wonders why they close to marry there, and not where her family may have been. Answer: Both Jessie Mather's parents were dead, her father having died the previous year.
However it is a certainty that William Carey [incorrectly spelt by the census official as "Carrie"] was living in Brampton, Cumberland, in «b»1871«/b» when the «b»England Census«/b» as taken in that year. Wife Jessie and sons, William and George are recorded living on Low Street. William Carey's occupation is given as "tailor's cutter". Two children are likely to have been born in Brampton, Elizabeth Mary "Bessie" (not yet proven, 1891 Scotland Census gives her birth in England) and Henry James (known). The first two children were born in Edinburgh, Scotland.
In 1877 daughter Jessie Mather Thompson was born in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland. Their wandering years were over for a while as each of the subsequent children were also born here.
The Valuation Rolls for 1895 show that the William Carey Thompson family lived in a rented house (5 Ochill Street, alloa, Clackmannanshire) owned by David Miller, a millworker (annual rent 12 pounds)
«u»«i»Annual Register for Clackmannanshire«/u»«/i» has entries for WC Thomson for the years «b»1888 until 1904.«/b» This definitely the same person, in spite of the name being spelt without the "p" in half the entries, for he is recorded living at the same address he gave on his letters to his son, George Batchin, during this period of his life. In these entries his occupation is simply given as "cutter" which I find interesting as it implies that even though it was a specialized skill he was not considered a master tailor.
The surviving letters seem to indicate that William worked for a firm of tailors in Alloa, called "Charmicheals" and that he was the victim of "down-sizing" and did not "retire" willingly or under happy circumstances. his last day there was 25 march 1904. Source; letter from Jessie Mather to George Batchin Thompson DSCN9572&3 of 24 March 1904
Between April an may 1905, Willian Carey Thompson and his wife moved to Crail,Fife, on the coast near St Andrews, where they had bought a house. Letters show they had spent holidays in Crail in earlier years. The house was renovated, an indoor "water closet" built among other things. Most of the children had left home by this time and only the youngest, Ally, had been aat home but now found lodgings. More details will come available as the letters are analyzed.
The valuation Rolls for 1905 show that William Carey Thompson owned the home in Crail.
At the time of his «b»death«/b» in 1909 he was living at 64 Nethergate, Crail, Scotland. The death certificate provides the«u» names of his parents;«/u» his wife; and confirms the spelling of his middle name. The death certificate was signed by his eldest son, William Alexander Thompson.
Surviving letters to his son, George Batchin Thompson over a period of nearly 20 years show him to be a kind hearted and poetic man, with an eye for the beauty of the world and a very positive outlook. See DSCN9238.
