- No birth certificate found.
This family is proving to be extremely difficult to trace.
Names of parents taken from death certificate, information provided by W.A. Thompson, son.
A search of all births to list William Mather as father between 1820 and 1840 in Scotlandspeople has failed to locate ANY of these children.
No William Mather is shown to have a wife called Ann Johnston.
I have also been unable to find a marriage between Ann Johnston and William Mather - the nearest seems to be with an «b»Agnes Johnstone at St Cuthbert's Edinburgh in 1821.«/b»
Searching for births on the mother's name- spelling of Johnston & Johnstone- also failed to find any children.«b» «/b»And yet all the Census records give her place of birth as Edinburgh.«b»
«/b» In the «b»1851 Scottish Census«/b» Jessie, aged 9 and a scholar was living with her mother, who is listed as the head of the household, and five siblings at 3 North Pick St, parish of St Cuthberts, Edinburgh.
In 1858 Jessie's mother died when Jessie was only 15 years old.
In the «b»1861 Scottish Census«/b» Jessie, now 18 years old was living with her father, William Mather who is described as a retired butcher; and her older sister, Jane, a dressmaker, at 27 South Bridge, Edinburgh. Jessie was described as a milliner.
This is definitely the right person for her sister Jane later married George Batchin, after whom Jessie's son George took his middle name. George's diaries mention visits by the Batchin family.
No mention has yet been found of the John Mather familyin George's diaries, but John did sign his mother's death certificate so that confirms that the 1851 census is the correct family.
In «b»1867«/b» Jessie married William Carey Thompson in Bishop Auckland, Durham County, England.
The «b»1871 England Census«/b» places Jessie, husband William Carey and the first two of their children: William and George in Brampton, Cumberland, England.
In 1894 Jessie and William and family were living in Alloa, Scotland, and holidaying in Crail where they later bought a house and retired. After William's death in 1909 Jessie moved back into Edinburgh, living in Portabello. The first letter that I have with this address on it was written in 1916. [George Batchin Thompson recorded in his diary 16 Feb 1914 that the house in Crail had been sold and that "«i»«sup»Looking for another in Glasgow«/i»«/sup»".] The first mention of writing to 'Edinburgh' was on 14 July 1914 so conclude they (Jessie and possibly her daughter by the same name. Ally was working in Alloa in 1918) must have moved to Portabello about ths time.
She died at 56 Finchview Terrace, Portabello, Edinburgh, Scotland after many years of being in pain, possibly from arthritis. Cause of death was given as Chronic Bronchitis.
From all accounts, she was a very active person who did not slow down because of her pain, but rather worked through the situations and then suffered afterwards. Numerous letters to her son George Batchin Thompson have survived.
