- This is probably the Barend Lindeque, living in the Zuurveld (near present day Grahamstown) in 1793, whose actions were a cause of the Second Frontier War.
"Firstly, a number of Xhosa engaged in a feud with Ndlambe fled from him into the colony, prompting some colonists to abandon their farms. Secondly, in May 1793 Barend Lindeque, a militia officer in the Zuurveld, who early in 1792 had given public warnings of his intention to attack the Zuurveld Xhosa, on his own initiative attempted to push them over the Fish (River). He had already contacted Ndlambe, who was also anxious that all Zuurveld Xhosa be driven back so that he could subject them to hso authority. The Second Frontier War (1793) broke out when Lindeque's Commando and Ndlambe's men attacked the Zuurveld Xhosa and captured about 2000 cattle. Thereupon...the coalition fell apart. The Zuurveld Xhosa, with Gqunukhwebe in the vanguard, counter-attacked. This sparked off a general panic in which the colonists abandoned the Zuurveld almost completely. In ensuing raids the Xhosa killed forty Khoikhoi servants, burnt twenty homesteads and...capyured 50 to 60,000 cattle, 11,000 sheep and 200 horses
