- Born in Port Shepstone Natal, lived at Paddock.
In 1955 at the age of 2, moved to Pietermaritzburg. Attended Merchiston Preparatory School and Maritzburg College.
In 1971 spent a year at Voortrekkerhoogte near Pretoria doing Military Service.
From 1971 to 1975 studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Cape Town.
In 1976 started work in Pretoria for South African Technical Industries, a division of Siemens, designing telemetry systems.
In 1978 joined General Mining in Johannesburg to work on methods of sorting ore electronically.
In 1982 joined RTZ Ore Sorters, a commercial manufacturer of Ore Sorting equipment. Was transferred to their Peterborough, Ontario, Canada office in 1987. In 1989, joined Carma Industries, Peterborough, working on load shedding systems and metering systems.
In 1990 joined Milltronics, a manufacturer of level measuring instruments, which was subsequently acquired by Siemens in 2000.
