Obituary: [Source unknown. In the possession of Pat Stephenson nee Wilkins. 2012]
Transkei sportsman dies.
East London. Albert Ladbury Wilkins, who died in Sr Henry Elliot Hoaspital, Umtata, at the week-end, was one of the Transkei's most remarkable and popular characters.
A brilliant all-round sportsman, Bertie Wilkins represented Border at rugby and cricket, and also played rugby for Western Province [during his days as a student at UCT].
An attorney by profession, he later joined the Transkei civil service as a relieving magistrate.
His irrespressible [sic] sense of humour endeared him to all who knew him. As a prisoner of war he decieved the Germans into accepting that he was an officer - although he was a private - and that he was an authority on International law, whereas his legal field was Bantu Law and Custom.
Heart Attack.
Mr Wilkins, an uncle of the Border cricketer, Chris Wilkins, had been ill for some years and suffered a bad heart attack a week ago.
His death is mourned by many Transkei Africans who called him 'Dubulingqanga' and used to applaud him all the way to the wicket and back in his active sporting years.
He was 60 years old at the time of his death, and was cremated at Cambridge yesterday afternoon.
