"...The Ladbury family lived in the Old House outside the Castle Walls at Rochester, Kent. They owned the shore line up to Rochester Bridge which spanned the River Midway. It is said that a relative rowed King Charles 1st across the river when he escaped from Hampton Court on his way to France 1647, and on his return gave the land to the Ladbury family. This land was finally sold to the City of Rochester and is now a promonade. The Brother of my mother is still a Freeman of the City of Rochester..." (Chas Wilkins 25/9/1969 written notes)
Ladbury Cottage was a much painted picturesque building. Medway archives have several etchings, postcards etc in their collection that can be seen on-line at http://cityark.medway.gov.uk. The archive also has a file on the cottage and a fonds of the Wilkins/Ladbury/ Hill family. There are also several paintings of the cottage in the Guildhall Museaum in Rochester.

At this point her mother was remarried and was living with her new husband, William Skelton, and son Mark Ladbury, and child Jesse, aged 1yr. Adelaide's father, Mark Ladbury, died in 1872 when she was only 10 years old. Although she is registered as married at this time, her husband was still listed as living at home with his parents. Adelaide must have been 5 months pregnant for Ernest William, her first child, was born in August.
The 1881 Censue record was difficult to locate as the name has been transcribed as "Wilkin" not "Wilkins"
