  PRIVATE In the 1841 England census, his occupation was stated as sawyer. Family lore says that he was an Admiralty Overseer. At the time of his marriage he seems to be resident in Cuxton ("of this parish"), up the river from Rochester and Chatham. At this time the records do not give profession or fathers names, but the marriage was witnessed by William Wilkins, who could have been his father or his brother, and Arthur Mills. The marriage record puts his wife as "Elizabeth Tomling" which has been altered, the "g" deleted and the "i" could be a "y". Elizabeth has signed her name as "Elizabeth Tomlyn".
