Provider of S.A. information Nov 1976: Mrs Marks, P.O. Box 1362 Alice Springs N.T. (deceased 1998)
nt.archives@nt.gov.au I am undertaking my family history that includes the Burchmores/Birchmores from the Flamstead area of Hertfordshire. In this process I have been provided with details of a South Australian line commencing with a George Birchmore 1825 Dunstable?-10/02/1908. Descendants included John 26/3/1871 Kangaroo Island - 1952 Willunga, George 23 /09/1901 Thebarton - 09/12/1968 Alice Springs and Joy. Most of this information was provided by Joy Marks (nee Birchmore) who in circa 1968 had a postal address of PO 1362 Alice Springs. Included in this information was a photocopy of an article from the Australian Pastoral Review 16 /08/1930 that provided an interesting background to George Burchmore's time at Kurundi Station some 300 miles out from Alice Springs.
This introduction is provided to demonstrate my interest in the Oral History Record "Joy Birchmore Marks, NT RS 226 Oral History Interview TS 280" that I have just discovered via the internet. I hope that this interview might assist with my research into both ancestors and what they did after arriving in Australia.
Could you advise me whether access is available to this Oral History and if so how I could gain access to the records.

Terence,
Your reference to Joy Marks Oral History Interview transcript is correct. We cannot sell a copy to you but we can provide photocopies of extracts from the interview transcript. At the end of this message, I have copied for you the introduction and table of contents for the transcript of interview. Please just select the extracts you would like to look at baring in mind that copyright only allows for copying 10% of the material.
I searched our Oral History Collection under "Birchmore" and found several references to George Birchmore. I can find the relevant extracts and copy these for you as well. Sometimes it is only one mention of the name confirming the presence and role of a person at a certain place and in a particular role. Sometimes there is more information about the person. I cannot be sure until I have looked at these extracts.
Finally I have located a probate file under the name of George Thomas Birchmore. I can copy this file for you if you wish. It might provide further details about him and his family.
I wait to hear from you. there is a cost of 33 cents per copy involved with all of the above GST inclusive.

INTRODUCTION Joy (Née Birchmore) MARKS was born at Adelaide House Alice Springs in 1932. Her parents George and Doris Birchmore set up Kurundi Station and later bought Frew River Station. Joy Marks recounts many interesting stories about growing up on an isolated cattle station. She describes Kurundi homestead, the bush furniture and the building. She particularly remembers her relationship with the Alyawarra people of the area. She mentions many of the people who worked for her father and the mutual trust that developed between them. Spending much of her early life in the Aboriginal camp, she learnt numerous survival skills for the bush. This interview was recorded by Hilda Tuxworth in Alice Springs in 1980. There is one tape.
