- Lizzie was born in Alice in the Eastern Cape and grew up on Malan Mission near Willowvale in the Idutywa district and also in Mankazana valley. Early education by [unnamed] governess. Higher education was at the [Huguenot] Seminary, Wellington (principal Dr. Bliss).
Lizzie married «b»George Batchin Thompson«/b» a young Scottish doctor, in the little church at Malan Mission on March 29, «b»1899«/b» and immediately set off on a long wagon trek of nearly a month to Bizana, their future home. Their departure caused great consternation among the native mission folk, for "Miss Lizzie" went away with a black horse presented to her by her bridegroom. That was her "lobola" and of course should have stayed there. Bizana in those days was a C.M. R. (Cape Mounted Rifles) outpost, with most of its personnel military [plus] Mr. W.S. Lewis, a trader, and Major Sprigg, the Resident Magistrate. Her husband was the District Surgeon, a post he held 'til about the time of the Second World War. At that time none of the present buildings were in existence, but there were a few on the bank of the river, and that was their first home. In 1908 they built the house "Claremont" at the top of the village. Here they lived the rest of their married life and had a large family
From Kokstad Advertiser, Thursday Feb 13, 1964. Author: [Nora Thompson?], unnamed.
Lizzie was 6 months pregnant with Kathleen when her first born child, Willie, died.
As told by Anddrew Thompson, Lizzie once shocked her father with the following grace:
"Little fishes, lick the dishes".
The regular Grace she said was,
"For these and all your bountiful gifts
We thank you Oh, Lord."
