• Notes

  PRIVATE Congregational minister Wrote an account of his father-in-law's life that is held in Bolton archives. [Not yet seen] In «b»1881«/b» James Johnston was a theological student in Bolton, marrying Mary Forsaith Best, the daughter of the Independent Chapel minister, Rev Robert Best, two years later. In«b» 1891 «/b» James, his wife and thier child Lilian known as 'Lily' were living in Haliwell. Lily is recorded as being born in Prescot, Lancashire so it it likely that they lived there for a while about 1885. The «b»1901 Census«/b» recorded the name as "Johnston«b»e«/b»", making it difficult to find but when found showed that the Johnston family had James' brother-in-law and his wife's sister, Rebecca Peachey Lundie [Nee Best] staying with them while on sabbatical from the Malan Mission station in South Africa. The Lundies' younger children were staying with their son, Frank, and daughter, Mary, in Edinburgh. It is not known why they did not visit the Johnstons with their parents. The most likely death record for James Johnston is Jan - March, 1921 in Chorlton, Lancashire.
