Notes - PRIVATE
- A medical doctor and surgeon, trained at Edinburgh University, qualifying in «b»1903«/b». He became the District Surgeon in Ngqeleni, Cape, South Africa
«u»Francis (Frank) William Lundie.«/u» MB.Ch.B.FRCS(E) (1880-1951). «i» "[Frank] and his sister Mary travelled to Edinburgh in 1900 … on the voyage they received a semaphored signal from a passing vessel that the siege of Mafeking had been lifted.
«tab»[Frank] studied at Edinburgh University, qualified as a surgeon and then worked for a while at the Dr.Barnado's home for children in London. In Edinburgh he and his sister boarded with the Shearer family. Mary Shearer later married a Stuart and settled in King William's Town where they provided a home-from-home for the Lundie girls at boarding school there.
When Frank returned to the Transkei he married Mary Macdonald Auld (1880-1928) and was appointed District Surgeon for the Ngqeleni and Libode districts where he continued to practice until his death. They had four children, Frances, Margaret (Midge), Anne and John. Their mother died at Umtata from complications following comparatively minor surgery performed by an East London doctor."«/i»

in «b»1905«/b» Frank registered with the Medical Directory giving his address as«b» Green St, Darwen, Lancashire,«/b» having graduated from Edinburgh in 1903, and "late house Surgeon and house Physician H.M. Hospital Stepney Causeway" [The hospital attached to the Barnardo Homes]. Source: Medical Directory 1905 p767
Interestingly this is only 9 miles from Bolton, the childhood home of his Mother (Rebeccal Peachey Lundie nee Best). «b»1910«/b» Frank was in District Surgeon in Ngqeleni, Pondoland West and this time he gives "F.R.C.S Ed «b»1907«/b»" so perhaps he earned some money and then went back to complete his F.R.C.S in Edinburgh?

24 April «b»1912 «/b»George Batchin Thompson records writing to Ngqeleni, so presume Frank was appointed District Surgeon by this time.
15 July 1912 George Batchin Thompson records the engagement of Frank to Mary Auld.
«b» 5 Feb 1913 «/b»George Batchin Thompson records in his diary:«b» «/b» "«i»Wire Frank & Mary. 'We join in your rejoicing with highest hopes & best wishes'. Their marriage day." «/i»GBT then records a honeymoon visit by the newly weds to Bizana.«b»
«i»
«/b»«/i»In «b»1928«/b» Frank's parents retired, left Malan Mission, and moved to Ngqeleni with Fum to live with Frank and his four children, as their mother had died.
The «b»1901 Scotland Census«/b» shows a 20-year old Frank Lundie living at 8 Spottiswoode St, in the district of Newington, Edinburgh Robertson Memorial parish where he is registered as a Medical student. Living with him is his 17-yr old sister, Mary Tasker Lundie and to my great surprise his 12-yr old brother, Marshall and 7-yr old brother Arnold. The household does not include any domestic help.
Frank's parents were in Darwen, Lancashire, England, staying with his mother's sister and her husband, James and Mary Johnston "Aunt Polly", on the night the census was taken. [This record was difficult to find as the names were recorded as "John and Rebecca Lunder".]
