    • He lived at Lower Murchison St, Ladysmith. With his share of his inheritance from his father he bought a wagon and oxen and became a transport rider. His cattle died of rinderpest and they had some hard times when he could not find work. They lived at No. 8 Murchison street and when the Klip River flooded they house would flood. Eventually he found work on the railways as a clerk and became a Foreman on the railways. He died of Cancer of the Throat.

      He left Ladysmith with his family (the three eldest boys) during the Siege of Ladysmith, and lived with family in Pietermaritzburg (his sister Gertrude and his wife Bessie's Aunt Emily)
