- «b»Catherine Pringle Lundie«/b» was the 6«sup»th«/sup» child of William Hannah Lundie and Mary Tasker, and the third child to be born in Auchterarder; the earlier children having been born in Coupar Angus.
Born in 1860 she was about a year old when the census was taken in 1861. The «b»1861 Scottish Census«/b» did not list their home address but it is to be supposed that it was the same as in later census times, on the Main street of Auchterarder, known as Lang Toon for it's long main street. In this census her name has been transcribed as "Catharine P".
By «b»1871«/b» Catherine was 11 years old and the family had reached its full size of nine children. The oldest bother, John as away at university in Edinburgh, and it is likely that her younger brother, Andrew Dasher may have already been showing signs of ill health. The baby, Jessie was already 7yrs old.
Catherine cannot yet be found in the «b»1881 Census«/b». The nearest possibility is a "Catherine Landie", the same age, but whose place of birth is given as Aberdeenshire, not Perthshire. These could both be errors. This "Catherine Landie" is registered as a boarder in Edinburgh with two other young women at 3 Parkside Pl, St Cuthberts Edinburgh. Unfortunately we do not know what she was studying. Her brother, Andrew, had died in 1876.
In «b»1887«/b» Catherine at age 28, married «b»Henry Begg«/b», and insurance clerk who had been born in Melbourne, Australia.
The following Marriage notice was published in the Glasgow Herald (Glasgow Scotland) Friday August 19, 1887; Issue 198:
«i»Marriages:
Begg-Lundie. At Auchterarder in the 17th inst by the Rev Mr M{illegible] North UP Church assisted by the Rev John Lundie, MA, Malan Mission, Kaffraria, brother of the bride, Henry Begg, Glasgow to Catherine Pringle, second daughter of Mr William H Lundie, teacher.«/i»
Henry died of a pulmonary thrombosis in 1890 so that by the time of the «b»1891 Census«/b» Catherine was registered living with her brother William Tasker Lundie and listed as the housekeeper.«tab»At this time the house was full as it included her sister, Helen, and husband (Rev Thomas Shearer) and their five children, her younger sister Jessie, and her elderly parents recently retired from teaching in Auchterarder. She had one household helper, young Mary R Rop (17 ).
In «b»1898«/b» at the age of 39 she re-married, this time to «b»Duncan McKay«/b», a teacher born in Glasgow.
In her will of 1901, Cathereine Tasker, her mother's sister bequeathed, "The chest of drawers in front room".
The «b»1901 Scotland Census«/b» was a hard one to find as there are a great number of "Duncan McKay"s and until I found the correct one I could not narrow down his date of birth. Searching on Catherine's name did not find the record and when I found it I could see why: her name has been transcribed as "Cath O". The census reveals that Catherine and Duncan were living at 5 Buckingham Terrace, Ayr, and they have a mother-in-law called "Mary Goudie" staying with them. Catherine's mother is "Mary Lundie"! [transcription error] This certainly explains why I could not find her in the 1901 census.
We do know that Catherine died at the age of 82, of cancer of the oesophagus, at 3 Monument Rd, Ayr, on 6th January «b»1941«/b». As her niece, Agnes Purvis was the witness I conclude that she had no children, or at the very least, none that were near at hand.
The death notice for Catherine reads:

Tasker (Deceased)... [Cause of death] carcinoma of oesophagus. Some years. Signed by J.S Geikie. M.D. Informant: Agnes S Purvie(Purvis?) Niece. 11 [or 41] Morningside Park, Edinburgh. 10.
