      Obituaries:

      From the «i»Scotsman«/i» of Wednesday, 1st February 1899: -
"By the death of Dr William Tasker Lundie, Glengyle Terrace, the career of one of the most promising of Edinburgh's younger physicians has been prematurely closed. He was born in I855, at Auchterarder, where his father was at the head of the Sheddan Trust School. «b»Trained for the teaching profession«/b», he also took the University courses in Arts and Science, graduating M.A. in I883, and B.Sc. in 1886. For some time he was on the teaching staff of«b» George Watson's Ladies' College«/b». (of George Square, Edinburgh)

Having long had a leaning towards the profession of medicine, he abandoned teaching, and at the close of his «b»medical course graduated M.B., C.M., in 1888.«/b»

For two years he acted as House Surgeon in Craiglockhart Poorhouse, and began practice in 1890. Being already well known to a large circle of friends, he soon established a large connection, and his winsome personality and his professional abilities made him a universal favourite among all classes with whom he was brought into contact. «b»Dr Lundie graduated as M.D. in 1893«/b», and, among other appointments, held that of Chloroformist to the Edinburgh Dental Hospital. Dr Lundie was married in 1895, and is survived by his widow and three children. His remains were interred in the Grange Cemetery on Tuesday, in presence of a very large gathering of mourners."

«b»From the " British Medical Journal."
«/b»To the regret of a wide circle of friends, a career of much promise has been cut short by the death of Dr William Tasker Lundie of Edinburgh.
Dr Lundie was born at Auchterarder, Perthshire, in February I855, where his father was Master of the Sheddan Trust School. As it was intended that he should follow the teaching profession, he entered the «b»Free Church Training College in Edinburgh in 1873,«/b» and thereafter had some experience in teaching at«b» Larkhall Public School. «/b»Returning to Edinburgh as one of the staff of «b»George Watson's Ladies' College«/b», he found time to attend the University Arts Course, and, subsequently, the Science Classes, graduating as «b»M.A. in I883 and B.Sc. in 1886«/b».

Having been strongly drawn towards the study of medicine, on closing his term of service at Watson's Ladies' College, he entered with much enthusiasm on his medical studies, and graduated «b»M.B., C.M., in 1888«/b». He received the appointment of «b»House Surgeon in Craiglockhart Poorhouse«/b», and after two years' experience there, he started the«b» practice of his profession in Edinburgh in May 1890«/b». Since that time, by diligence and devotion he built up a steadily-increasing practice, the claims of which proved too exacting for a physical frame by no means robust.

In«b» I893 he took the degree of M.D«/b»., his thesis being on Neuropathic Oedema. Dr Lundie held the post of «b»Chloroformist to the Edinburgh Dental Hospital.«/b»
Though for the last year or so his friends were apprehensive that he was overtaxing his strength, and saw ominous signs of growing exhaustion, Dr Lundie kept bravely to his work till prostrated by an attack of «b»sub-acute rheumatism«/b» in August 1898. On recovery, an attempt to resume his work was followed by an «b»entire breakdown.«/b» Rigors and high temperature supervened, and signs of «b»acute tuberculosis«/b» developed. After fifteen weeks of great weakness and prostration, borne with much patience, the end came on 28th January.

Dr Lundie was a man of lovable and genial disposition, and of high Christian character. He was an elder in Argyle Place U.P. Church, where he was held in high esteem by pastor and fellow-members. He was married in I895. His illness and death have evoked many and widespread tokens of regret and of sympathy for his widow and children, as also for his aged parents.

      «b»From " The Student,"
«/b»IT was with great regret we learned of the death of Dr Lundie, whose many qualities of heart and head made for him a place in the affections of a very large circle of friends and patients.
He was a Perthshire man, having been born at Auchterarder in February 1855, where his father was schoolmaster. At first he followed his father's profession, passing successfully through the Free Church Training College here, and afterwards teaching in George Watson's Ladies' College. The desire of his heart was the " healing art," and against many obstacles he set about the study of medicine with the greatest enthusiasm. He graduated M.B., C.M., in I888, and was soon after appointed House Surgeon in Craiglockhart Poorhouse. Two years later he started practice for himself in Edinburgh, taking his M.D. degree in I893 for a very able thesis on Neuropathic Oedema.
Dr Lundie was a typical Scotsman. He was not afraid of hard work, and had the courage to enter on courses of study while others would stay to count the cost. His energies found other outlets besides medicine, as he took a very large interest in Christian work, especially in the church of which he was an elder-Argyle Place U.P. Church. He believed in doing, and he grudged neither time nor labour in what he considered to be a good cause. He unfortunately over-estimated his strength, and sacrificed himself on the altar of the public weal. It is hard to reconcile oneself to the death of a fellow in the noonday of a busy life, and with many years of useful service lying before him. The greatest sympathy is felt for his widow and little children, into whose sacred sorrow we cannot intrude. We would only remind them of the lines of Longfellow:-
      «b»«i»"There is no death ! What seems so is transition;
      This life of mortal breath
Is but a suburb of the life Elysian,
      Whose portal we call death."
      «/b»«/i»
