How do I remember? Well, some money-conscious person said that Ma arranged this date as it was the last day of the income tax year and as we married on that day, I had to pay Ma's income tax.
Thinking on, I think I got 6 weeks leave from the army [embarkation leave] before going to Burma and after about a month's leave I asked for a couple of weeks extension of leave and the night before I was due to go back to camp, a corporal in the detachment I was in, phoned me up in Jo'burg [at your aunt Ursula's home] and asked if I had heard the news. Being newly married what the heck would I want to listen to the news!! It was about the dropping of the atomic bomb.

- Born in Bizana and attended primary school there; later went to Kokstad High school.
Attended University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg where obtained a Bachelors degree, and Masters in Geology.
His "Ex-Volunteer's Identidy book records his date of "assumption of Full time Service 11 Feb 1942.
From a letter from Nora Thompson neé Clarence, to her husband Ronald Thompson. 3rd April 1944, Bizana.
"Did you know that Andrew has his commission, and now wears one pip. He tells me that he wants to become engaged to Billy Wilkins before he leaves [if she will have him!]."

Military service for 4 years including in Palestine, in the South African Engineers in the 42 Geological Regiment primarily looking for water sources. [Approx 18 months].
On return early in 1946 took a position in the Hydraulic Branch of the Public Works Department, Nairobi, Kenya and then with the Geological Service, Kenya until 1959.
Took Geological Service in Lusaka, Northern Rhodesia, 1959-1964.
1964-1969 Geological Service in Bloemfontein, South Africa with work done in Lesotho during this period.
1969-1980 Geological Service in Bulawayo, Rhodesia.
Retired to "Wenwe" in Shelly Beach, Natal South Coast 1980-2003
Moved to a cottage in the "Village of Happiness" 2003-2016
