- When she was born the family were iving at «i»"10 Church Street facing Pietermaritz Street in this city"«/i». Louisa was schooled in Maritzburg at St. Anns College and in due course qualified as a teacher. She recalled that her first teaching post was at Charlestown, on the Transvaal/Natal border where she was governess to many of the chidren of the Boer farmers living in the area. One of the Boers whose children she taught was General Kemp who later became Cabinet Minister in General Smut's Government.
She was an accomplished pianist with a pleasant singing voice and on Sunday evenings she would gather the family round the piano for a hymn singing session.
While living in Barberton she frequently visited Boer women in the concentration camp, set up by the British in 1900, on the outskirts of the town.
