Notes - PRIVATE
- In «b»1861«/b» the «b»Scotland census«/b» shows Ann living with her husband, James, who is 18 years her senior; her parents; four children: (Jessie Lundie 6, Ann H Lundie 5, John Lundie 3, Robt H Lundie 1) and a servant, Isabel Black 17. They lived in High Street, Arbroath where James was a stationer. Ann's father's occupation is listed as a Steemboot [transcription error for "steamboat"] Steward.
In «b»1871 the Scotland Census«/b» shows that Ann, at 39 years old, is now the head of the household following the death of her husband in 1868, and that the family has moved to 5 Ogilvies Close, Dundee. Ann is listed as the one providing income as a "Bookseller & Stahoner" [transcription error = stationer]
The household now consists of: Ann Donald 14, a servant; Ann's parents: Jessie Honeyman 65, and Robert Honeyman 66 (now a retired Steamboat steward); and the 6 children: Jessie Lundie 16, Annie Lundie 15, John Lundie 13, Robert Lundie 11, William Lundie 6 and Georgina Lundie 3. A child called James had been born in 1862 but had died two years later so does not appear on any census.
In «b»1877«/b» she attended the death of her sister-in-law, Jessie Wallis who also lived in Dundee, and signed her death certificate. The "Worrrall's directory of the North-Eastern counties of Scotland...1877" lists "Ann Lundie, bookseller & newsagent, S Nethergate"
By «b»1881 the Scotland Census«/b» shows that Ann (49) had now moved to 1 Long Wynd, Dundee and had Jessie W Lundie 26, Robert H Lundie 21, William Lundie 16, and Georgina Lundie (13), living at home. They must have been doing relatively well for they also employed Phemie Livingstone (14) to help in the house. Ann is listed as a bookseller this time.
In «b»1891 «/b»the«b» Scotland Census «/b»records an "Anne Rundie" [transcription error - should be Lundie]«b» «/b»living at 4 Tay Terrace, Civil parish of Liff and Benvie** in Angus at the age of 59 still working as a bookseller. Although all her children have left home she has with her at that time her daughter, Anne Lyall (35) and her 9-year old grand daughter, Rhoda Lyall. The servant at this stage is Annie Valentine (15) so we assume the business was sound.
** Liff and Benvie was a parish in the counties of Perthshire and Angus, in Scotland. It was created in 1845 and abolished in 1975. It was also known as Liff Benvie and Invergowrie. It was part of Dundee.
The record of Wills and Testaments shows that "Anne Wannan Lundie or Honeyman, 6 Aberlemno Terrace, Dundee, widow of James Lundie, sometime Stationer there, d[ied]. 17«sup»th«/sup» September, 1900 at Dundee".
