      Hi Terence,

There is an interesting answer to your question. This is the story...

This part of my genealogy comes from my fathers cousin, Gwen Norman, who did extensive research in the 1960's and 1970's. She has since died. She traced her own ancestry (the Birchmore lines and the Norman lines from my web site) a considerable way back. At the time she was an active member of the British Genealogical Society. All her research was published including sources. Some of it has found its way to the LDS web site. (Unfortunately I don't have access to her source records)

      >From what I can gather, most of her information came from parish records, wills, and hearth tax records. I have been in contact with a number of genealogists on the Norman side, and have found very good agreement between their research and Gwen's. There is only one discrepancy, which dates back to the mid 1600's. You are the first contact I've had on the Birchmore side.

Here is an excerpt of a letter from Gwen dated 6 June 1972, which explains what you want to know: "Grandma Norman's father [George Birchmore 5553] was born at Studham in 1813 and baptised George Birchmore Plummer - the son of Elizabeth Plummer [5553] of Studham and George Birchmore [277] farmer of Row End Farm, Flamstead. George Plummer Birchmore was "baseborn" [Illegitimate] - in 1838 when his father died he changed the order of his last two names and was known as George Plummer Birchmore - very proper too, as far as I'm concerned" later..

"Back to naughty George Birchmore [277] of Flamstead in 1815 he married Ann Norton [278] at Flamstead, of course his eldest legitimate son was baptised George [276] and he (George senior) [277] farmed at Row End Farm and his sister [Sarah 732] and husband [Michael Rowed 2705] farmed Cheverell's Farm, also at Flamstead. Legitimate son George also farmed at Flamstead (Legit son George [277] b. 1816 married Sarah Kingston [769] in 1842)

Naughty George who lived from (1786-1838) died before his father another George [723] who lived from 1763-1843 Flamstead born the son of Thomas [137] and Sarah [Andrew 751] Birchmore. George (1763) married 1784 Susanna Reading [727] who was born in Redbourne in 1763 - she died in 1788 at Flamstead possibly in childbirth (daughter Sarah) she was not baptised until 1786 in Flamstead so the Reading family may have been non-conformist. [and she goes on...] I will get around to adding a lot of Gwen's written material to my web site. Also getting some of the above detail on there. In the meantime, if you have questions about further back, please drop me a line.

At some point I'll add in the cousins to my genealogy. Do you have your family tree on computer, and can you generate Gedcom format files?

Also, I'd love to make contact with some of the other Birchmore researchers.

      Cheers, Andrew

Based on your information we have a common Burchmore ancestor - George Burchmore son of George Burchmore and Susanna Reading.

However, we then conflict on who was the son of this George Burchmore. My research has the son as George Burchmore same birth a death dates as yours, however, marriage records have my George Burchmore marrying Anne Norton. " LDS film 1040653 - Page 6 No. 18 George BURCHMORE of this Parish and Ann NORTON of this Parish were married in this Church by Banns with consent of friends this sixth day of April in the year one thousand eight hundred and fifteen by me Henry SMALL. This marriage was solemnised between us Geo BURCHMORE and ANN NORTON in the presence of John SAWELL and Hope Rhodes."

My research shows George and Anne as having children : William, John Norton, Thomas, Anne and George. I come down through the William line. The John Norton line has a link to New Zealand and South Africa. I have received information from other Burchmore researchers that George married a Sarah Kingston.

I have also found a Birchmore line that went to Kangaroo Island South Australia. Reached South Australia 19 April 1848 aboard "Bolton" with wife and child (State Library of SA). The descendants of George think that he may have come from Dunstable.

Your information is interesting and I will examine it further. What research do you have on the marriage of George Burchmore and Elizabeth Plummer?

Have you be in contact with other Burchmore researchers in Hertfordshire? I have a useful contact if you need one.
