- Flamstead
A large but sparsely populated agricultural parish which includes the hamlets of Trowley Bottom, Pepsal End and Roe End. The principal village of Flamstead probably grew up around a small community of Benedictine nuns in the 12th century. No trace of the nunnery can now be found, following its dissolution in 1537, but on its approximate site stands Beechwood Park - a fine Queen Anne period mansion house which is now a private school
The 14th century parish church of Flamstead houses a wealth of unusual treasures including a plough painted in traditional designs and colours and a shepherd's crook which is 200 years old.
Watling Street, the old Roman road, now the A5 runs through has a junction with the M1 motorway providing superb road connection. Although this modern major intersection is a matter of hundreds of metres from Flamstead village, the village retains the tranquillity of an earlier age.

It was with great interest I read your web site on your family history outlining the Birchmore family name.I have spent many years tracing my history in Bedfordshire ,I first started back in the 1980's and this past year did a further review and was able to trace it back to c1550 based at Flamstead. It is very difficult to go back before this date as Parish records did not exist and it depends on Manorial and other records.
I live in Bedford so most of the records are in the archivists office about three miles from where I live. Looking at your e mail address I believe you live in Australia.
In your write up 'Back beyond Flamstead' you mention at the end of the first para, Thomas Birchmore 1579--1646, he had a brother William b 1585 and a sister Jane b1581.I have traced my tree back to this William from the present day. William was a family name through succeeding generations to the mid 1800's.
It was interesting about the colonies, SA and NZ. In my travels I always look in the telephone book to see if there is a Birchmore, but it's a rare name.
The following is a note at the bottom of my family tree which may interest you.
"This family tree is based on records contained mainly in the County Archivists office at Bedford County Hall. County records from Huntingdonshire,Herts and Buckinghamshire were also examined as well as the International Genealogical Index maintained by the Mormons. No family tree can be 100% accurate especially pre 1800,the further back, judgements have to be made on the information available.
The majority of this research was done in the 1980=92s and reviewed again in 2005 when the period pre 1664 was amended to ensure a consistent spelling of Birchmore by examining the original records. Other spellings in the area were Byrchmore and Burchmore. The families seemed to stay with the same spelling throughout the succeeding generations and often lived in the same village for over two hundred years. rom the mid nineteenth century the Birchmore family moved away from the Kensworth area with the coming of the industrialisation and more work opportunities. Up until around the early 1800=92s they were labourers, farm and other manual workers.
The name Birchmore is believed to have originated from birch trees on the moor and Birchmoor Green, just north of Woburn still exists on the Ordnance Survey map. For at least four hundred years the church in Woburn itself was just a chapel-of-ease to the now non-existent parish church of Birchmore. This parish was about a mile to the north of Woburn, but all that remains today is a farmhouse and a few cottages. The avowdson [the right to present a clergyman] of the parish church at Birchmore was part of Hugh de Bolbec=92s original gift when he founded the Abbey at Woburn in 1145,with the proviso that the abbey should provide a competent priest. In 1308 the Abbot obtained a licence from the King to appropriate Birchmore and its tithes, and to use the glebe land [land which could be farmed by the incumbent]."
At Woburn in Bedfordshire there is a pub now called The Birch, until a few years ago it was The Birchmore Arms built around 1870.It used to be a spit and sawdust place but now its all upmarket and posh but very nice and friendly with good food. The old Manor house [
Birchmore farm] still stands and is a farm in what was the parish of Birchmore.
There are no records of the Parish of Birchmore in the Doomsday Book in the 11th century so it must have started just after then.
Regards
