    • Thomas never married. In 1866 he was living in Pietermaritzburg, but by 1870 had moved to Ladysmith where at first he was employed as a clerk. Afterwards he worked as a law agent and conveyancer.

      On May 6, 1870, an advertisement for the Klip River Agricultural Society listed his name as Acting Hon. Secretary

      In July 1874 he was appointed to act as Officer for the Sale of Gunpowder, Ladysmith, during the absence from the Colony of W.A. Murray (son of A.K. Murray). In 1876 according to the 1876-77 Klip River Co. voters' roll, he was a clerk, living in Harrismith. He was back in Natal by the time of the Anglo-Zulu War when in January 1879 he was commissioned as Quartermaster of Carbutt's Border Rangers.
      On April 5, 1884, the Witness carried an advertisement for "T.W Burchmore Accountant, Conveyancer & General Agent Ladysmith" I

      By 1888 he was one of three trustees of the Ladysmith Building, Investment and Loan Society.

      The Natal Witness of September 12, 1873 reported that on September 6, 1873 he attended a ball in Ladysmith for captain and Mrs Lucas who were leaving the colony.

      He died in 1889 cause of death Delirium Tremens
