Notes - Burger, Swellendam
He was a vegetable farmer on the farm «i»Jan Harman's Gat, «/i»(a corrupted form of «i»Schat«/i» meaning treasure). The farm is situated west of Swellendam on the road to Ashton. The farm was a popular «i»uitspanplek«/i» (camping place)«i» «/i»and his hospitality was legendary. In 1876 the farm was sold to Frederik Jacobus van Eeden, who renamed it «i»Nooitgedacht. «/i» As this was after his death, it must have been one of his sons (known as "Groenteboer van Zijl") who sold it. Today (2009), it is a guest house and has been renamed «i»Jan Harmsgat«/i», and many of the buildings have been restored. (http://www.jhghouse.com/). Previously, the farm had been in the hands of Hermanus Steyn die Jonge, who became president of the shortlived Swellendam Republic.
«i»
«/i»His son, Gideon Petrus signed the Death Notice. Despite spelling his father's name as van Zyl, he signed his own name van Zijl.
