- Harry is mentioned in Granny Loo's book as follows:
1897:
"Now we had another move to a bit larger house, as we got a very good billet for my brother Harry, at a large drapery store in Beaufort and got on well. He was very keen on cycle races and had lots of young friends«b».«/b»"
"...and my brother Harry joined a cycle corp. to carry dispatches. «i»(Note: This was during the Boer War)«/i» He got his commission and did really well during the war and saved a lot of money, as the firm he worked for paid him while he was on active service. He went to South America «i»(Note: Argentina)«/i» after the war was over, to try a new country with the money he had saved."
«i»(Note: He served as a Lieutenant in the Beaufort West Town Guard according to UK Military records)«/i»
According to the website «u»<http://www.drault.com/pdb/boers/boers.fechas.html>«/u» he was one of the founding pioneers of the settlement of Comodoro Rivadavia in the province of Chubut in Patagonia. He is listed in the passenger list of the ship «i»1º de Mayo«/i» which sailed to Comodoro Rivadavia on May 20, 1902. Among the passengers was a group of "Boers" who were going to the settlement, among them "Luis Baumann, Conrado J.Visser, Juan Coulter, Livingston, N.de Marillac de Ladybrand, Callie Verwey, Cornelius Dirks -médico-, Johannes Palm, Eliot Calvert, Willhelm Vogelpootje, Rudolph Krieger -médico- Harrington Fillmore, Joseph Weber, Henry y Jimmy Cheyne, George De Jager, Margarita Palmer y el italiano Camilo Ricchiardi"
Camillo Ricchiardi was a well known figure in the Boer War, known as the "Italian Boer War Hero". He commanded the Italian Corps, a group of mercenaries and volunteers who fought on the side of the Boers, notably at the Siege of Ladysmith, where they were involved in the capture of Winston Churchill, and during the retreat of the Boers to Lourenco Marques. After the war he acted as an agent for the Argentine government, recruiting Boers ("bittereinders") who wanted to emigrate to escape British rule.
Harrington ("Harry") Fillmore was a member of the party which formed the first group of Boers who went to Comodoro Rivadavia in Chubut Province, Argentina. According to the book "En Las Tierra del Viento. Ultima travesia Boer 1902 - 2002", the party consisted of Harry Fillmore, John Coulter, Fransisco José Behr, William Henry Watson, Luis Baumann, Martin Matthew Venter and Conrad Visser, and their task was to reconnoitre the lands offered to the settlers by the Argentine Government. In November 1903, he was a member of a party consisting of Conrad Visser, Benjamin Myburgh and a man named Coetzee, who travelled to Trelew to bring back 5000 sheep they had purchased for the new colony. It took them three months, as they had to travel up the River Chico to find a ford shallow enough to cross with the sheep. In 1910 it was reported that he was occupying Lot 40, League 'A' of the North Expansion of the Escalante Colony. The property consisted of 2 wells, a two room house of adobe walls, a warehouse
In 1914, he left farming, eventually joining the Ferrocerrilera Oil Company, where he worked until shortly before his death in 1945.
According to the book "Extraños injectos en al árbol Patagónias":
"He was very assimilated, but always kept his English accent, learned Spanish with correctness; earned friendships at all levels, for his cheerful nature and affable disposition. In the Boer Colony, among other activities, served as Commissioner Justice of the Peace."
