  • Notes
    • From Loo's Book, in 1901:

"We could not get any place to live in Cape Town, so we had to stay with my mother. Cape Town was full of refugees from all parts of the Transvaal and the rents were sky-high, so Charlie Noble, my sister's first bay, and my little girl Maude, were born in my mother's house.

By this time, Herbie was out of the Army and had started work at Salt River workshop; he was a carpenter by trade.

«b»«tab»«/b»When Charlie was born, my sister was very ill. She had a very serious operation just after Charlie was born, so when my little girl was born six weeks later, August 9«sup»th«/sup» I called her Maude after my sister. Maude had dark curly hair, dark eyes and was so pretty, and she looked like a doll. I was quite happy with all my girls. I spent lots of time making the pretty clothes"
