- There is a "Walter" Philcox in the 1851 census age 8 mos. I assume this is him (perhaps he was Harrington Walter?) because later census records show Harrington Philcox born around 1850 and Walter born abt 1857.
In the 1881 census he was living in High St, Gray's Thurrock, Essex. His occupation was Manager of Chalk Quarry. They employed a 22 year old servant, Annie Easterby.
In the 1882 Kellys directory for Essex, he is listed at 1 Jasper Villas, Grays Thurrock.
According to Granny Lou's book:
"My father came from a large family of boys; only two girls. My father was nearly the youngest of the boys. He quarreled with his father, so decided to come to South Africa to try his fortune here, but he certainly never made a fortune. After he had got a good billet on the railway, he sent money home for my mother and we three children to come to him. None of his family wanted us to come, as South Africa seemed a wild place all those years ago, and a long sea journey of six weeks, but my mother thought it her duty to go to her husband, so we set sail."
Once in South Africa he changed his name from Harrington Philcox to Richard Fillmore, and changed the last name of his children from Philcox to Fillmore. His great-grandaughter Cristina Fillmore has a copy of the name change document.
He was an assistant Station Master in Cape Town. In 1891, he was living at 3 Sunrise Villas, Main Road, Mowbray (Source: 1891 Cape Almanac). In 1890 he was living at Kinsley Terrace, Observatory, Cape Town (Source: 1900 Juta's Directory).
In 1916, he wrote to his son Harry in Argentina from Mafeking. He wrote:
"
