• Notes

  Johannes Swart, came from Hoorn in the Netherlands. Arrived ca. 1685 and in 1692 was joined by his wife and children who had remained behind in Amsterdam. "Sieketrooster" (Lay Preacher?) at Stellenbosch until 1701. He was also secretary of the local Landrost Office, and drew up wills, contracts and powers-of-attorney for the public. The couple lived on the corner of Andringa and Dorpstraat, Stellenbosch. In March 1697 he purchased the farm "«i»Vallei Luctry«/i»" (today "Valley Lustre" on the road to Somerset West) from the Huguenot Jean Margra. After three years he sold the farm to Guillame du Toit of Rijssel. All South African Swarts descend from his two sons Johannes and Pieter. SWART Familienaamboek SWART Betekenis: Iemand met 'n donker uiterlike of swart bare. Stamvaders: (1) Johannes Jan-seun Swart, waarskynlik uit Hoorn (Nederland). Kom ca. 1685 hier aan en in 1692 kom ook sy vrou en kinders, wat intussen in Amsterdam gewoon het, na die Kaap en sluit hulle by hom aan. Sieketrooster op Stellenbosch tot 1701. Hy was ook sekretaris van die plaaslike landdroskantoor en het testamente, kontrakte en prokurasies vir die publiek opgestel. Oorl. voor 1710. Trou (in Nederland) met Margaretha Klaas-dogter Coen, Coenie of Coerie (3 kinders). Die egpaar het op die hoek van Andringa- en Dorpstraat, Stellenbosch, gewoon. (2) Nicolaas Jacob Reinier Swart, geb. 3.6.1831 in Amsterdam (Nederland), seun van Jacob S., see-offisier en later professor aan die vlootkollege, en Anna Scherius. Kom in 1850 hier aan; boekhouer en onderwyser; 1863 boer in Transvaals 1866 Gereformeerde predikant in Pretoria; 1871 staatsekretaris van die Z.A.R.; later ander beroepe. Oorl. 1892 op Mosselbaai.
