Notes - PRIVATE
- Trained as a teacher at Hugenot College, Wellington. Later took a BA degree at the University in Maritzburg.
Taught in Cape Town, his first post (1935) being at a school in Woodstock for Coloured children, then in Butterworth, then from 1957 until he retired, at the General Botha College in Gordons Bay, Cape, South Africa.
The Naval College in Gordons Bay was known as the General Botha Training College for merchant Navy officers. As you approach the Gordon's Bay from the Cape Town side, you will see on the mountain side the famous 'GB' sign, an enormous anchor, made of whitewashed rocks. When I was little I thought this was a tribute to my uncle George Best (GB Thompson) as it seemed a fitting tribute to this wonderful teacher and gentle, unassuming man.
George taught mathematics at the college and in his "spare time" he worked out the schedule of the log tables. He is said to have wanted to be a doctor.
