Notes - PRIVATE
- Took his bachelor's degree at University of Natal in Pietermariztburg, went to war where he worked in the medical field, and returned to study medicine at the University of Cape Town.
Became an thoracic surgeon where his left handedness that had been converted into ambidextrousness turned to great advantage.
Worked in England where he met and married Catriona.
Worked in Salisbury, Rhodesia for some years before returning to UK to take up a position in Edinburgh.
Retired to Ayreshire then to Edinburgh.
From Mary Haines_Lundie: Thank you for the sad news of the death of Dougie. We enjoyed the time with him when he was in London in 1953 just before we were married and because of his new job in Edinburgh he was unable to be our "Best Man" which had been arranged earlier. He and Catriona came here to visit us in Pretoria when Harral was about six, I think. He had a post as Surgeon at the hospital in Salisbury, later Harare for a time and I think my sister Betsy saw them sometimes before work in the hospital became too difficult and they left for Scotland.
He joined Bets and me and John on the pavement in Pall Mall to sleep the night and watch the Coronation Procession the next day. I'm sorry to say that John and I chickened out at around 9 o'clock on Coronation Morning as the weather was cold, wet and miserable and we walked back to London House where John lived in London and watched the whole thing in comfort on TV ! ! Bets and Dougie sat it out and saw the lot !
