    • 1893Notes from Andrew O. Thompson gives his name as Gemlie. Teacher.

Andrew has to be the person who has the most variation of spelling of his name, to date, in my research:
Andrew's name is transcribed as "«b»Andrew Gemlay«/b»" from his birth certificate, registered in Panbride in 1829. The «b»1841 Scotland Census«/b» transcribes his name as «b»Andrew Gainley. «/b»The following censes in 1851 has his name as «b»Andrew Gunlie «/b»and his marriage certificate to Helen Lundie in «b»1855 «/b»has the name«b» Andrew Gemlie «/b»which is found again in the «b»1881 Census and on his death cerficate.

The 1841 Census«/b» shows a 12yr old Andrew living with his parents, Thomas (21) and Jane(26) (nee Archer) at "Firth Muir ", Panbride, Angus. Jane Strachan (80) and John Walker (25) are living in the same household but the Census does not reveal their relationships. [The ages of his parents must have been incorrectly transcribed for in the «b»1851 Scotland Census«/b» their ages are given as 51 and 54 yrs old.] By 1851 Thomas is registered as a teacher, and living with his parents at "Crombie Mill" in the town of "Crambie Mill Farm", Angus.

In «b»1855«/b» he married «b»Helen Lundie«/b» in Arbroath. He was 26 years old and she 43 - an unusual relationship, to be sure.

In «b»1861 «/b»Andrew and Helen were in North Bute, village of Hamesburgh, living in Shore Street, where Andrew is recorded as a 31-year old "Congregational Teacher."

By «b»1871«/b» they had moved to Edinburgh, to 35 Barony Street in St Cuthbert's. This time 41-year old Andrew is recorded as a teacher followed by an illegible word.
      «b»
«/b»In «b»1881«/b» he and Helen are living at 35 Barony St, St Andrew, in the civil parish of Edinburgh St Cuthberts, Midlothian. Andrew «b»Gemlie «/b»is listed as«b» "«/b»Teacher Headmaster".

The «b»1891 Census r«/b»ecords Andrew Gelmie age 61 [with his birth place being reported as in Carmylie, Forfarshire, not Panbride which is 5-1/2 miles away] and Helen aged 78 living at 14 Spottiswoode St. Edinburgh. Andrew is discribed as "Teacher master public school". This was after the big change in the education system that closed all the private schools and which left William Hannah Lundie without a home or work. Presumably Andrew was able to weather the change into the new government education system.

In «b»1893«/b» Andrew was left widowed when his wife, Helen Lundie died at the age of 80.

In «b»1901«/b» Andrew was still living at 14 Spotteswoode St in Morningside, Edinburgh. He is listed as a 71-yr old widower and retired teacher. He had a 29-year old servant, Margaret Swan, housekeeper living at the same address. [His name has been traanscribed as "Gemlce" in this census]

«b»1st April 1904: From a letter to John Lundie from Tom Shearer[«/b»who lived at 13A Morningside Drive, Edinburgh«b»]«/b»: ".. I visited Uncle Gemlie this week. his memeory is failing him greatly. On donw lately wh was over in Princes St and forgot where he lived. He went down tp Barony St looking for his house. He said this week to me "Is Mary your wife's name". Was William your father-in-law (This last of course was right) & then he said "Are all the Lundies away f rom Edinburhg" where are all the students..."
